Title of Subplot Nothing bonds a family like a dark, horrible secret.
Cast Debra Morgan, Dexter Morgan
Late in the year of 2006, Debra Morgan was kidnapped by her fiance, Rudy Cooper. Except that wasn't his real name. His real name was Brian Moser. And he was the serial killer the media heralded as The Ice Truck Killer. Debra was drugged and strapped to a table, her assailant preparing to kill and dissect her as he had done with his other victims, mostly hookers. Only this time... he was using a very different method this time.
The method used was that used by another serial killer in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Brian's biological younger brother, Dexter Morgan. This little factoid was unbeknown to Debra, and Dexter was content for it to remain that way. And it almost did.
As Dexter came to Debra's rescue, the drugs wore off and Deb heard bits and pieces of the conversation.
Thoughts spun through Debra's half-drugged mind. Her brother was a killer? And Harry, her dear father, had taught him?! It didn't make sense... How could her father, a decent and honest police officer, have trained a killer?
Brian was wrong. Dexter was a killer and a hero. He killed Brian, seemingly without knowing that Debra was even awake and aware of her surroundings, saving his sister's life.
It wasn't until after Brian was dead that Dexter realized that Debra had seen and heard everything up to that point. Torn between letting his Dark Passenger lead him into finishing the project and his conscious mind knowing that Debra was there, he tried to explain as he removed her bonds and let her up.
Refusing to hear any of it, Deb left the building, her mind attempting to process everything that she had seen and heard.
Debra had processed the information she learned that night, but is still torn between turning her brother into the police because of his crimes and letting him continue to walk the streets because of their family connection.
Dexter continues to let his Dark Passenger take control every once in a while, ridding the streets of Miami of yet another unchecked killer, adding more slides of blood to his growing collection, which Debra has never seen.
Though neither will admit it, the two have a closer bond because of this dark secret that they share.

Brian: Your victims. Are they all killers?
Dexter: Yes.
Brian: Harry teach you that?
Dexter: He taught me a code. To survive.
Brian: Like an … absurd avenger?
Dexter: That's not why I kill.
Brian: You can be yourself around me. Who. Am. I?
Dexter: A killer. Without reason or regret. Free.
Brian: You can be that way too.
Thoughts spun through Debra's half-drugged mind. Her brother was a killer? And Harry, her dear father, had taught him?! It didn't make sense... How could her father, a decent and honest police officer, have trained a killer?
Dexter: But the code …
Brian: Dex! You don't have a code. Harry did. Now he's been dead ten years. You can't keep – keep him sitting on your shoulder like Jiminy Fucking Cricket! You need to embrace who you are now.
Dexter: I don't know who I am.
Brian: 'Course you don't. You've been away from your family since you were three. But I'm here now. I can help you. We can take this journey together.
Dexter: I can't. Not Deb …
Brian: No – no, don't say that.
Dexter: I'm very … fond of her.
Brian: You can't be a killer and a hero. It doesn't work that way!
